Mission Blog: Grupo de Chicago Temple · First United Methodist Church
Janice and John Cogswell

Crew: 17 Americans and 3 Chileans
Date: January 2nd through January 19th
Goal: Build 12 pews for Second Methodist Church of Iquique
Location: Iquique and Alto Hospicio
Status: Accomplished above intended

On January 2nd John and Janice Cogswell arrived on Iquique. Becky and I went to pick them up at the airport. There were 17 people altogether from the United States.

On January 5th the equipment and lumber was ready to start working. People from Second church came to help build pews and cook.

The logistics, lodging and setting up was in charge of the EMANA office. I interpreted for the group and my responsibilities involved dealing with "pocket money" and also group management this time.
We were working at Robert Johnson High School for two weeks straight. We were visited in two occasions by the local newspaper.

The work was hard, especially for Enrico Mora, who came from the south of Chile to work, an d had to drive the district car for the group during their stay.

The goal was build 12 pews, but we managed to make 14. Two coats of barnish were applied on them before the group of volunteers left.

The traditional farewell dinner at Bavaria was held on January 18th.

We thank all those who came to help us build pews. You are wonderful people.

Thanks to Pastor Cerna and Chicago Temple First United Methodist Church.

Thanks to the Cogswells, for their beautiful calling to serve others, in other countries.

Thanks to Marcela, Beto and Enrico for helping us so much.

God bless you and hope to see you real soon.

Work with Group from Alabama in Arica / Trabajo con grupo de Alabama en Arica

Salmos 136

From November 3rd through 10th, a group of volunteers came from Alabama, to do construction work and evangelizing in 'Avanzada el Redentor,' which is a missionary chruch in Arica. John Elmore invited Claudia, Sandra, Rocio, Flor and me over to help with the work there. Flor couldn't come with us. We accepted the invitation and we arrived on Arica November 3rd. We stay at a small hotel downtown Arica, called 'Mar Azul.' The group welcomed us and we felt just like part of them.

Walt Mellown was my roommmate then, unfortunately - for him - I snored a lot.

Worwise, John seemed pleased with the wor done. Foundations were settled for two walls and one wall was half the way when we left. We had Bible study both at 'El Redentor' and the Central Methodist Church of Arica. One of the things I enjoyed the most was coordinating the service and worshipping with Marcos Córdova, a dear friend of mine at a Sunday service at the Central Church.

We also had Bible study for kids. 15 children from the negihborhood came everyday. Katherine and Nola, who were part of the volunteer group, shared important lessons with the kids. We visited people who lived near the church. Elderly citizens, lonely and ill people received a message of hope. As we prayed, the Spirit of God filled our hearts, letting us know of his love and grace for all those who cry out in need. There were no cultural boundaries for the love of God in those homes, in those moments of prayer.

Visiting door by door, and delivering such an important message; that God loves and loves always, motivated us to go even when people were not welcoming. The poeple who opened thwir homes and hearts to us made it all worth it.

Praised be God, for everything He does. 'Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.' Psalm 136
